Your Appointment

Before any treatment, appointments always start with talking - so I know what is most important to you.

What to expect

Your first appointment begins with a short form to fill in, then a conversation about why you’re seeing me, your general health, and your medical history, as this is relevant to your treatment.

Clothing

I will then examine you, but I will never ask you to take off more than you’re comfortable with. Underwear that allows me to see your back, and trunks or briefs for men, is helpful.

Examination

I will assess your alignment and movement including your areas of discomfort, neck, shoulders, back and hips. I’ll then explain what may be causing your symptoms and outline how I plan to treat you.

Treatment

Treatment involves a combination of hands-on techniques. I will explain each one before using it, and at every stage you can let me know if you’d rather try another option.

Some techniques may involve a ‘click’ or ‘crack’, which some people don’t like; just let me know and I will use alternative approach.

After the hands-on treatment, I’ll show you some tailored and realistic exercises or stretches, and practical advice to support your recovery. I will write these down (on a fridge magnet!) so you can refer to it later.

After the appointment

You may feel a little sore for 24 - 48 hours afterwards - this is normal, although not everyone feels it. You are always welcome to contact me if you are concerned.

Home Visit Practicalities

I bring a height-adjustable treatment couch, which I usually set up in the living room or kitchen (and have done in a warehouse, a narrow boat, and a pub bar!)

Don’t worry if you are unable to get on and off the couch - I adapt my techniques to suit your position and the space available.

Items to have ready

Please have the following items to hand if possible:

  • A hand towel

  • A large bath towel or blanket for the couch

  • A couple of pillows or cushions

  • Surface wipes or kitchen roll and cleaning spray

  • Moisturising lotion (such as E45 or hand cream; helpful but not essential)

  • Somewhere to wash my hands

Furry friends

I am definitely an animal person, and pets are very welcome to say hello and to stay during the appointment. However, some animals can get anxious with a stranger using hands-on treatment, so please ensure they have a comfortable space elsewhere for the duration of the session.

Appointments for Babies

Home visits are particularly well suited to babies, as treatment can take place in a familiar and comfortable environment. This helps babies remain relaxed and can reduce stress for you. Examination and treatment is always gentle and can be carried out while your baby is on your lap, on the sofa, or feeding.

Benefits of home appointments for babies include:

  • No need to travel with a newborn, or to find childcare for their siblings

  • I can see your baby in their usual environment, including sleeping arrangements, feeding positions, and daily routines, which can affect discomfort or tension

  • Advice and treatment adapted to your family’s and baby’s individual needs

Siblings

Brothers and sisters often like to watch what is happening with ‘their’ baby, and be involved in their care…so please do not feel like Big Sis or Big Bro need to be out of the way during the appointment. Giving them the opportunity to help can make a big difference to the family dynamic, and reduce tension for everyone.

Appointment Lengths

  • First appointment: 60–75 minutes

  • Follow-up appointment: 45–60 minutes

  • Baby appointment: 90 minutes first appointment, 60 minutes follow-up

If more than one issue needs addressing, I will help you prioritise so that your most important concern is managed first.

If time is tight, let me know so I can make sure I cover the most important issues for you - although 30 minutes (the time for a clinic appointment) would be the minimum to make sure nothing is missed.

“Elizabeth has been absolutely fantastic with our newborn, doing some cranial osteopathy sessions within the first few weeks post birth and following her tongue tie division. We've noticed a big difference after the sessions and we've been given some exercises to do with her in between sessions which have been great too. The home appointments have been fab rather than having to travel to a clinic, especially in those first few sleep deprived weeks! I'd 100% recommend Elizabeth to anybody.”
