Testing for carpal tunnel syndrome

If you sometimes have tingling or numb fingers and an aching hand or wrist, particularly at night, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one possible cause.

One test used as part of an assessment is Phalen's test. Bending the wrist for up to a minute may reproduce tingling or numbness in people with CTS. However, this test cannot diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome on its own, as your symptoms and other examination findings also need to be considered.

People with CTS I've treated have included carpenters, hairdressers, knitters, cyclists and painters.

If you have symptoms that might be carpal tunnel syndrome, I can assess your hand and wrist and discuss appropriate treatment and self-management. If the diagnosis is uncertain or your symptoms need further investigation, you may need further medical assessment.
